Characters.
This page explains the personality of some the main characters in the text.
Callum
Callum McGregor is a Nought and one of the main characters in the story. All he wants to do is be somebody, make a difference and be with Sephy, but this is proven difficult as life changing events happen to him. He is strong minded, smart and wishes that noughts and crosses can be equal (even though he has many reasons to hate them) , so he can finally be with Sephy in peace.
Callum is a very passionate person which becomes clear due to the way he reacts to certain events. For example, when his Father was killed, he felt not just grief at the loss of his father but extreme anger towards the Crosses at the injustice of his death. He also risked his life to fight for what he believed in with the Liberation Militia, and died to save his unborn child which shows how much he cared about what he believed in and that there is no limit he wouldn't go to save the ones he loved.
Callum is also very determined. This is clear when he explains how hard he worked to pass the Heathcroft school entrance exam, and how he continued to work hard once he was in to make sure he wasn't kicked out. He had an eagerness to learn and was determined to get an education; despite how hard it was because of the colour of his skin.

Sephy
Persphone Hadley is a young girl who is a Cross, and daughter of the very powerful Jasmine and Kamal Hadley. Her life is the complete opposite to Callum's, and yet they remain best friends and later on in the text, lovers. Sephy is naïve, self centered, and even though her intentions are always good (good intentioned), her plans to help people usually don't work out. An example of the was when she arrived at Callum's sister's funeral, hoping to show the McGregors her support. But instead, they got angry at a Cross being there and kicked her out.
She cares deeply for Callum, and wants the same things he does, but even for someone of her status, it's hard to make a difference.

Meggie McGregor
Meggie McGregor is Callum's mother who used to work as a care giver for the Hadley family. She is kind, and even though she has a slight soft spot for the Hadley children, she hates the crosses. Meggie does her best to care for her family, but doing so is hard when you're a nought.
Jasmine Hadley
Mrs Hadley is the wife of Kamal Hadley and mother of Sephy and Minerva. She is an alcoholic who puts her reputation of being a rich, powerful, politicians wife before everything else; even her children. This makes her miserable and lonely as she has to live with the guilt and consequences of her actions just because she wanted to keep her good name.
Ryan McGregor
Ryan McGregor is the father of Lynette, Jude, and Cullum and wife to Meggie. He is a very strong minded character, and due to this he will do anything for his family, no matter to what extent. Mr McGregor is also a strong believer in equality between Noughts and Crosses, and fought with the L.M to try and make this happen resorting to violence, which is against the beliefs of his wife.
Kamal Hadley
Kamal Hadley is a very powerful politician who is Sephy and Minerva's Father, husband to Jasmine Hadley. Kamal's very dedicated to his work, so much so that he neglects his family. This is shown in the novel by all his family as they all at some point mention his absence. Mr Hadley's relationship with his wife is not good; as he never forgave her for cheating on him and loves somebody else, but still chooses to stay with her for his reputation's sake. This makes them both extremely lonely, unhappy, and have a distant relationship with their children.
