There are many examples of symbolism in this Novel. They include:
The baby
Sephy and Callum's unborn child was a symbol of the love they had for each other. It symbolises the life they could've spent together in a different world, and a different time. The baby shows that Noughts and Crosses can love each other and live in peace, as it will be a mix of them both. It will symbolise Callum and show that even though he died, he won't die in vein. It is a representation of a new chapter and a new begging, especially for mother Sephy
The Alcohol
The Alcohol symbolises Sephy and her Mother giving in to the pain they felt from their lives, and drowning their sorrows instead of dealing with the problem. "It's to smooth out the rough edges" her mother said. They drink to feel better and to simply forget the problems they have. Alcohol is a symbol of hopelessness, selfishness, loneliness and regret which is exactly what is felt by Sephy and Mrs Hadely.
